The oil that is obtained from the seeds of Camellia plant Camellia japonica is known in Japan as Tsubaki-abura; however, in the West it is also commonly known as simply as Camellia oil. Camellia oil is a natural vegetable oil that has no smell or taste and has been used by the Samurai, Japanese Craftsmen and Sword Smiths for centuries as the very best protection against corrosion for all high carbon steel tools and weapons. Having a low viscosity, Camellia oil is easily applied to tools either by hand or with the specially designed Japanese applicator called an Abura-Tsubo. When used regularly Camellia oil forms an exceptionally good protective barrier against corrosive effects of moisture and air.
We strongly recommend that Camellia oil be used on all of your high carbon steel tools and knives especially after you have finished sharpening them to keep the cutting edge in tip top condition and prevent it from dulling due to the inevitably causes of rust.
Not Just for Knives and Tools
Just as a point of interest, the leaves of certain species of Camellia are picked and made into the beverage that we commonly call Tea (C. sinensis). And whilst there are about 100 to 300 described species of Camellia and several thousand hybrid spices, the seeds of C. oleifera are harvested and pressed to produce the cooking oil called 'Tea oil' that is used by many millions of people especially in southern China as it has a high flash point and does not go rancid.
In the Kitchen
Since our Camellia oil is pure and simple that does not contain any other oils such as mineral oil etc., it can safely be used on kitchen knives and other kitchen appliances.
Please Note: Whilst our Camellia oil is food safe, we advised that it not be taken internally, we do not recommend cooking with it or using it directly on food as we cannot certify that it is of a high enough quality to be considered food grade.
As a Beauty Aid
Camellia oil, since it contains about 80% the Oleic fatty acid Omega-9, can also safe be use as a beauty aid as it makes an excellent emollient that softens both skin and hair. Omega-9 is well known as a remarkable transdermal carrier since is very effective in retaining the skin’s moisture. It is quickly absorbed and permeates deep into the lower layers of the skin thus providing skin support and flexibility, which in turn promotes cell growth.
Please note no other item is included in this sale: 1 x 50ml bottle of Camellia Oil.
