This traditional styled 'R' shaped Fire Steel, sometimes known as a 'U' shaped fire steel, depending on what way you use it, was very popular in England during the 17th to 18th Century.
As a way of recycling, by blacksmiths of the time, many of them were originally made from old Files. Recycling steel in this way could dramatically reduced the cost of making them since high quality steel was still, at the time, relatively hard to manufacture. The simple ‘U’ or 'R' design was most probably used because it is one of fastest and simplest ways to turn spent Files into useful and resalable goods. This being done by simply drawing out the end of broken File into a long narrowing tang, curling the very end to form a small circle and then bending the tang over to form a ‘U’ or 'R' shape.
This Fire Steel has been given a 5/5 'ease of use rating'as its ideal for beginners upwards and towards a more experienced user of Flint & Steel. Please note no Flint or Tinders are included in this sale. These can be purchased separately from our other listings for Tinders and Flint.
