This beautifully hand forged 17th Centuary Austrian Fire Steel replica has been made by the much esteemed Black Smith, Andrew Kirkham. The handle is twisted and curled backwards creating a beautiful and unusual design and the two notches were apparently used for straightening tools such as a Scythe. To us it’s much too beautiful to be used on a Scythe.  

Going back many, many centuries, lots of Fire Steels were made from old Files. Recycling steel in this way could dramatically reduced the cost of making them since high quality steel was still, at the time, relatively hard to manufacture. The simple ‘U’ design was most probably used because it is one of fastest and simplest ways to turn spent Files into useful and resalable goods. This being done by simply drawing out the end of broken File into a long narrowing tang, curling the very end to form a small circle and then bending the tang over to form a ‘U’ or some people like to call them 'R' shape. It deends which way you like to hold them. We personally like to hold it as a 'U' shaped one. Over time the designs became more and more elaborate and ornate.

These extremely well made Fire Steels were made for us by the much-valued blacksmith Andrew Kirkham who specialises in historical replicas.  No other items are included in this listing.
