This beautifully hand cross stitched leather Neck Sheath started out as a custom piece made for Helen at Beaver Bushcraft and was so admired at the shows that we attend, Mark decided to make a batch of them for the website. Hand crafted by  Beaver Bushcraft and made to fit this classically designed elegant R shaped traditional fire steel striker. 

Going back as far as the Middle Ages, Fire Steels were sometimes worn around the neck for safe keeping. Back then Fire Steels were considered to be an item of importance. In the 17th century fire steels became even more elaborate in design on were often worn on a chatelaine with other items. Here at Beaver Bushcraft we are following a tradition but bringing it up to date. 

This beautifully elegant styled Stuart or Georgian ‘U’ style Fire Steel was popular during the 17th to 18th Century and many that have been found are made from old Files. Recycling steel in this way could dramatically reduced the cost of making them since high quality steel was still, at the time, relatively hard to manufacture. The simple ‘U’ design was most probably used because it is one of fastest and simplest ways to turn spent Files into useful and resalable goods. This being done by simply drawing out the end of broken File into a long narrowing tang, curling the very end to form a small circle and then bending the tang over to form a ‘U’ shape.
