This type of ancient primitive fire lighting is not for the faint hearted. It will take patience and practice to get the right technique. We at Beaver Bushcraft prefer to use the drop spark method, where you strike the Flint down onto the Pyrite which will produce a shower of small sparks.  The sparks are quite faint but allow them to drop onto the Tinder. The tinder should then catch one of the sparks. When you strike a pyrite nodule with a sharp piece of flint (or another pyrite nodule if you have two), tiny flecks of the iron Pyriteare struck off and they instantly react with oxygen in the air, creating a hot spark. We find Amadou Tinder Down which is quite fluffy, works better than Char Cloth but you can use whatever Tinders you want that works well for you. Please remember flint can be very sharp and sparks can be hot, please handle with care!
