Made from tough natural russet leather, this leg gaurd is made with no frills, just built to last and to take a bashing from knapping. We decided that as our beospke version was so popular and with the increase in people wanting to do flint knapping, we decided to bring out a basic version, no frills, just tough leather and ready to go.

Flint is Dangerously Sharp!

It is strongly advised, when practicing your flint knapping to carefully consider the safety ramifications of this beautiful but somewhat dangerous art form. Shards of flint are renowned for being Razor Sharp once stuck from the flint core.

It is, therefore, just a sensible precaution that you protect yourself from these dangerously sharp cutting tools; after all, flint cutting tools, knapped straight from the flint core, have been used by our forefathers for millions of years for hunting and butchering animals – if they can easily butcher a Wooly Mammoth what damage do you think they are capable of when it comes to your own hide?

Using the Flint Knapper’s Leg Guard is, therefore, a very important safety measure consideration to be worn when used for both pressure and percussion flaking.

Construction of the Flint Knapper’s Leg Guard

Our professionally made leg guards are made from the very best quality 9oz or 3.5mm (+/-) Veg Tanned cowhide leather, with a double-layered Working Platform that offers a whopping 7mm (approximately 18ozs) of flint shard stopping thickness. Its tough leather construction will safely protect your leg from any of the razor sharp shards of flint that are produced. in vast quantities, when flint knapping. These professional grade leather Leg Guards make flint knapping a snap. 

Solid Brass Rivets

The Leg Guard is hand-riveted together with solid brass rivets, so that you know it will never fall apart – ever! 

Dimensions 

The overall dimensions of the Flint Knapper’s Leg Guard is approximately 10-inches (254mm) wide (around the leg, not including the straps) by 8-inches (203mm) long (up and down the leg). The Working Platform is 10-inches (254mm) wide by 8-inches (203mm) long and about 7mm thick because it is constructed with a double thickness of leather in this area; it is also securely riveted to the main body of the Leg Guard.

The Buckle side of the strap is approximately 12-inches (305mm) long and has a top-of-the-range Stainless Steel buckle so it is built to last; there is also a built-in heavy duty Belt Keep to stow the tongue side of the strap once leg guard has been buckled to your leg. The Billet, or Tongue, side of the strap is approximately 8.5-inches (215mm) long with 9 holes spaced 1-inch (25.4mm) apart. Naturally with such a large number of holes the Flint Knapper’s Leg Guard will fit almost any sized leg – be they large or small, male or female! The Buckle and Billet sides, of this professional grade Leg Guard, are both securely Double-Brass-Riveted, by hand, so that they will never work loose.
