There are three basic approaches to fastening the pouch flap:
Fastening Options Show are Sam Browne (left), Military Black Press Stud (middle) & Leather Toogle (right)
The first option is to use a solid brass traditional Sam Browne stud that has been used to fasten items together for well over 100 years. The Sam Browne stud is a proven, reliable and very simple military fastening technology, invented in the 19th century by British army officer called Sam Browne, who had the misfortune to lose his left arm whilst serving in India. Naturally, therefore, Sam Browne studs enable you fastening two items together with just one hand and in only a couple of seconds. Using the KISS principle, as a guide, Sam Browne studs really have nothing that can go wrong with them, they simply work by pressed the brass Sam Browne stud through a specially prepared eyelet in another piece of leather. Moreover, this simple, reliable fastening system has been adopted by many of the world’s army and police forces, being used as part of their uniforms and other pieces of kit.
The second choice is to use high quality Press Studs that are available in a choice of three colours, Brass, Chrome or Military Spec in Black.
The third option is to use the very traditional Toggle method of fastening together two items of leather together giving your pouch that time honoured traditional rustic appeal. Since Toggle technology has been in use for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years, you can be sure that it works, and works well. Toggle technology is so reliable that it is practically guaranteed to never go wrong or fail, if it does, however, the technology is so low that a new Toggle could be fashioned from some old lace and a bit of leather, antler or bone in just a few minutes. Our toggle can be made from either Leather or Antler.
Choose from six different colours of leather that range from the natural colour of the leather, called Natural or Russet to Saddle Tan, Hazelnut Brown, Chestnut Brown, Mahogany or Black.

Cross Stitching in our 3-strand braided waxed artificial sinew (real sinew would be prohibitively expensive to make and use), or our extra heavy weight, 1.7mm diameter, brown, braded Tiger thread, gives each hand ‘Cross’ stitched Pouch a traditional rustic look that compliments the veg tanned leather that the pouches are made from.
Fire Steel Loop Option
With a FireSteel Loop incorporated into this item you will be able to stow any Army sized FireSteel, such as the Light-My-Fire - ‘Army’ FireSteels or our PyroFlint™ - Army sized FireSteel. If you would like another size of FireSteel Loop attaching to this item, instead of the standard Army size, then please ‘Contact Us’ when you make your purchase and we will be happy to alter the size for you.
What are Hudson Bay Tinderboxes?
Hudson Bay Tinderboxes are beautifully crafted traditional tinderboxes that were used by our forebears during the 18th and 19th as a trades good in the wilderness territories of North America and Canada. Commissioned by the famous Hudson Bay Company during this time these fantastic little tinderboxes were a much-prized item that could be used, in deft hands, to light fire just about anywhere, in mere seconds.
PLEASE NOTE: None of the Hudson Bay Tinderboxes or any other accessories shown on this page are included in this sale. However, if you would like to purchase one of the matching items please look at the options available in our other listings.
Please also note that sometimes we do have a waiting list of at least 2 weeks for our bespoke leather items.
