This beautifully styled Stuart or Georgian ‘U’ style Fire Steel was popular during the 17th to 18th Century and many that have been found are made from old Files. Recycling steel in this way could dramatically reduced the cost of making them since high quality steel was still, at the time, relatively hard to manufacture. The simple ‘U’ design was most probably used because it is one of fastest and simplest ways to turn spent Files into useful and resalable goods. This being done by simply drawing out the end of broken File into a long narrowing tang, curling the very end to form a small circle and then bending the tang over to form a ‘U’ shape.
