'Fire Buddy' 4-in-1 The Fire Lighting Tool has been designed by Mark Hordon and made for us exclusively by Dorset Woodland Blades. It has been designed to be used as a Bow Drill Bearing Block as a Traditional 'Flint & Steel' Fire Lighting tool and as a striker for modern Ferrocerium Fire Steel Rods. It also has been cleverly designed to be used with a Hand Fire Drill Set with Thumb Loops, which makes Hand Drill Fire Lighting a doddle.
The 'Fire Buddy' is made from 8mm thick metal and measures 70mm x 30mm and weighs in at 88 grams. The Fire Buddy's thickness has been carefully calculated to efficiently disperse heat when it is being used as a Bearing Block during friction fire lighting (i.e. The Bow Drill method of Fire Lighting), however, it is advised to lubricate the bearing with some oil, petroleum jelly, a green leaf or some grass etcetera, which will help to reduce any heat build-up that will inevitably occur when two surfaces are rapidly moved against each other.
The holes has been drilled through each end of the 'Fire Buddy' so that a cord can be laced through them and then the ends tied with Thumb Loops, thus enabling the Fire Buddy to be used as a bearing block for use when making fire with a traditional Hand Drill Fire Set. This allows you to apply more downward pressure without having your hands slide down the drill shaft as you rotate it. A handy tip is to sharpening the tip of the Drill to about a 70° point, which will allow the bearing to remain in place whilst using the thumb loops and rotating the drill in the socket.
