This beautifully elegant styled Stuart or Georgian ‘R’ style Fire Steel was popular during the 17th to 18th Century and many that have been found are made from old Files. Recycling steel in this way could dramatically reduced the cost of making them since high quality steel was still, at the time, relatively hard to manufacture. The simple ‘R’ design was most probably used because it is one of fastest and simplest ways to turn spent Files into useful and resalable goods. This being done by simply drawing out the end of broken File into a long narrowing tang, curling the very end to form a small circle and then bending the tang over to form a ‘U’ shape. Some people call them 'R' shaped, others a 'U' shape, depending on how you look at them. We personally prefer to hold our 'R' shaped Fire steels upside down as we find its easier to strike when used with a sharp piece of flint and some tinder.
Please note no Flint or tinders are included in this listing but these can be bought separately via the drop down menus. Or if you want to add one of our Starter Tinder Pouches or tinderboxes these can also be ordered via our drop down menus. Any other items seen in the photos are for display only. This listing is for 1 x Fire steel only.
